"We know this takes some work for the person receiving Flat Stanley, but it gives the kids a first-hand look into different regions around the United States and even the world. Several of the students received special surprises and some to share with their classmates. Once the packages arrived, the students opened them and presented the information to their classmates. After his adventures were complete, the recipient mailed Flat Stanley and the information back to the school. They included information about what he has been doing or interesting facts about the area or state in which the recipient lives. Then, they wrote a description or a letter of their adventures with Flat Stanley. The Flat Stanley recipients took snapshots of Flat Stanley around their hometowns or unique places in their communities. Through this project, they were able to map where Flat Stanley visited and learn more about each place. The second graders created their own Flat Stanley and sent him to a relative or a friend.Īs part of their social studies curriculum, the students learned about geography and the locations of countries, cities, and states. He has many adventures while he is flat, including being able to travel all over because he can be mailed in an envelope like a letter. The book follows a boy, who was flattened when a bulletin board falls on him. Jamie McMahon's second grade class read the book "Flat Stanley," by Jeff Brown.
